Hi. I’m Faiza, and in just forty days from posting this entry, I’ll be celebrating my 40th birthday.
Honestly, I have no idea where the time went. How did I get to forty? Where did the time go? Did I use it wisely? Am I ahead of the game of life or severely behind as so many believe?
Maybe that’s why I’m starting this written journey with all of you. As this milestone approaches, I can’t help but dive headfirst into the twists and turns that have shaped my journey so far. Sometimes, I feel like I’ve played more roles than a Broadway understudy. I’ve been a teacher, a preacher, and always a seeker of truth and understanding. Every stumble has taught me something, and trust me, there have been plenty; more than plenty if I’m honest, and you know what, it all began with this blog nearly two decades ago. Some of you may have even been here since the beginning of what now seems like a very, very long journey.
I suppose that’s why it only feels right to share this life audit on my blog with all of you.
Here, I want us to explore the joys, challenges, and nuances of being a single woman approaching middle age…
UGH!!! It’s still weird to even write that out—middle age.
Yet in a society where familial and societal expectations often define a woman’s worth based on whether or not someone wants to marry her or if she’s met all the appropriate milestones, I want to challenge perspectives, celebrate personal growth, and create a space where others in similar situations can find solidarity. If I’m honest—I need it myself. A tribe that is willing to be honest about many of the things I’ll be discussing in this forty-day journey with you. A chapter I hope to meet with a hell of a lot more excitement and enthusiasm than I’ve ever felt on a birthday in my life.
I refuse to let another milestone be met with tears and depression. I’ve wasted enough birthdays like that.
Not this time. I intend to bring in forty by celebrating myself in the way I and plenty of other women like me rightfully deserve—no man or ring needed!
